If you have room behind your tank, you can get one of those mini micro rollers from Lowe's and use flat black latex. It will go on fairly easy. If you don't want black you can always get them to tint a dark blue or something, but it will cost a little more.

I used the blue acrylic craft paint you find in the craft dept at walmart or any craft store. Used a foam brush, but in a tight spot, you could pour the paint in a foam plate and use those small foam paint rollers like Wes said.
It took 1 and 1/2 of those little bottles of paint to cover the back of my 180 gal.

I guess it's easier these days with low VOC paint. In the dark ages, we didn't want any kind of chemical fumes getting sucked into the air pumps of an operating tank. I used a piece of very dark blue burlap-like fabric, attached to the back frame with velcro.

You can also use the plastic backgrounds like Gerwin sells. Some people tape them in place, but I think that's kind of tacky. I have heard of using vegetable oil and putting a very thin film on the glass. You then lay the background against it and work out the air bubbles. It will stay for a very long time (maybe indefinitely) due to the suction of the oil/glass/background. Don't know if it works though.
